Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear during sessions?? Casual dress is encouraged. It's best if we can make a quick getaway from the hotel to the bus, so feel free to wear ski clothes to the conference. I will be wearing ski clothes.
How many papers per session? Two. We're planning for presenters to get about 30 minutes per paper and discussants 10 minutes per paper. That'll leave 25 minutes per session for general discussion.
How do I get from the airport to the hotel? Your best bet is probably a cab. Should run you about $25 (one way). The hotel is the University Park Marriott, and it's at 480 Wakara Way in Salt Lake City. Wakara Way is off of Foothill Drive, just southeast of the University of Utah. The direct line to the hotel is 801-581-1000.
How far is it from the airport to the hotel? The airport is all the way across town from the hotel, but luckily we're a small town. It's ten miles and 16 minutes (according to Google Maps).
How do I get from the hotel to the Thursday night reception? The hotel has shuttle buses that will take you anywhere you want to go --- within 3 miles of the hotel. Luckily, Scott and Rachel's house is 2.4 miles from the hotel. I'll be arranging for buses to leave the hotel at 6:50 and 7:20 (for the fashionably late). Our home address is 1344 Yale Ave, and phone is 801-582-0201. If a shuttle driver gets lost, tell him/her that "the coordinates are 1080 South and 1344 East." (Salt Lake City is laid out on a grid, and any local will be able to get you anyplace given the coordinates.)
Can I bring my non-economist spouse/significant other? Please do. The dinner on Friday night will be for conference participants only, but Rachel Hayes will be organizing a "spouse event" for that evening. They'll probably have more fun than us. Spouses will be welcome to ride the conference bus up and down the mountain on Friday and Saturday, and are invited to the Saturday dinner at Deer Valley (see the conference registration form).
Can I bring my kid(s)? Please do. Kids who ski are invited to ride the bus and come to Saturday dinner. I will do my best to provide information about child-care arrangements for kids who don't ski. Please let me know if you are interested in information about child care.
Can I go cross-country skiing? You're coming to the land of champagne powder, and you want to go cross-country skiing?!? Seriously, there is a large network of trails in Park City, and we'll try to figure out some way of transporting cross-country skiers over there. White Pine Touring operates a network of trails right in Park City.
What if I don't like cross-country skiing either? Well then how about shooting down a steep, snow covered hill on an inflated inner tube? Or maybe snowshoeing? Check www.parkcityinfo.com for more ideas.
Can I rent skis/poles/boots somewhere? Of course. Our bus will stop at Sports Den on the way up the mountain on Friday morning. The experts there will get us outfitted ASAP.
Where will we ski? We'll probably ski at Park City Resort on Friday, and Deer Valley Saturday. For those interested in some post-conference Sunday skiing, there may be a group headed up to Alta and/or Snowbird on Sunday.
